Sternotherus odoratus, also known as the eastern musk turtle or stinkpot, is a small turtle with a domed shell
Physical characteristics
Size: 2–5.5 in (51–140 mm) long
Carapace: Brownish-black, smooth, oval, and domed
Plastron: Yellow to brown, relatively small, and has only one movable hinge
Head: Triangular with a pointed snout and sharp beak
Neck: Long with yellow lines that are often visible when swimming
Feet: Small and poorly webbed
Legs: Short
Tail: Longer in males, with a spike at the end
Behavior
Forages for snails, clams, and aquatic insects
Basks in the spring to increase egg development
Breeds 1–4 times a year, mostly in spring and fall
Females dig nests and lay eggs, but don't provide further care
Males mate but don't provide further care
